The stereo speaker protector circuit serves to protect speakers from DC leakage current in the power amplifier and to provide a delay (delay) when the power amplifier is turned on. Loudspeakers are connected to the power amplifier should be protected from large power surges or voltage occurs and DC leakage current in the output power amplifier. Inrush current or DC voltage and leakage current can damage (burn) the speaker coil or coil load speaker. Stereo speaker protector circuit is very simple, easy to make and can be used to protect the speakers from voltage spikes and DC leakage current at the output of the power amplifier. A circuit and a list of components to create a speaker series surge protector can be seen in the following figure.

The stereo speaker protector circuit above is very simple, consisting of 3 transistors that function as a DC current detector and delay circuit (delay). Parts of the stereo speaker protector circuit above can be explained as follows.

  • DC current detector section, this section serves to detect leakage DC current at the output of the power amplifier. This section was built with 2 BC547 transistors each function to detect DC leakage current in the channel L and R channel power amplifier output.
  • Delay section (delay), this section serves to provide a delay (delay) loudspeaker connection to the power amplifier when the power amplifier is turned on. Delay circuit (delay) is the RC circuit that activates TIP121 transistor that functions as a relay driver.
  • Contactor speakers section, this section serves to connect the speakers and power amplifier. The loudspeakers connected to a power amplifier using 12-volt relays operated by TIP121 transistor to the control of a delay circuit and a DC current detector circuit.
